2018 General Member’s Kangeiko Report

Day 1:
06:30 – 07:30
66 participants
Instructed by Nariyama Tetsuro shihan

After kihon practice, Nariyama shihan explained that our basic techniques can, broadly speaking, be divided into two categories: atemi waza (striking techniques) and kansetsu waza (joint techniques). Nariyama shihan announced the theme for the first day of kangeiko practice would be atemi waza.
Sakai sensei demonstrated kihon atemi waza (5 techniques) as well as applications of each of these techniques from ai gamae katate dori and gyaku gamae katate dori grabs. Nariyama shihan then explained how these kata techniques can be incorporated into our randori practice through tanto counter techniques, or ‘kaeshi waza’.

Techniques practiced were:
Shomen ate kaeshi waza against hiki taoshi
Shomen ate kaeshi waza against sumi otoshi
Gyaku gamae ate kaeshi waza against waki gatame
Gyaku gamae ate kaeshi waza against tenkai kote gaeshi
Gedan ate kaeshi waza against kote gaeshi
Gedan ate kaeshi waza against mae otoshi
Ushiro ate kaeshi waza against tenkai kote hineri
Ushiro ate kaeshi waza against jodan junte dori oshi taoshi

Day 2:
06:30 – 07:30
61 participants
Instructed by Nariyama Tetsuro shihan

Nariyama shihan explained that originally there were no such attacks as empty handed shomen uchi, yokomen uchi etc. These attacks were representative of attacks with weapons, and we should bear this in mind when practicing. Koryu Goshin no Kata, as developed by Tomiki Kenji shihan, includes numerous techniques against weapons. While one of the characteristics of Shodokan Aikido is our practice method of tanto randori, as a sport the attack is limited only to a thrust. It is important we also study the tanto dori techniques of the Koryu Goshin no Kata. This kata practice is not only for the purposes of grading examinations, but should be studied at any level as a compliment to our randori practice and for its inclusion of various types of attack.
Nariyama shihan instructed tanto dori (8 techniques). After everyone practiced this, Nariyama shihan continued by emphasising that the most important aspect of these techniques is correct avoidance or taisabaki.
After taisabaki practice, finally Shiori sensei demonstrated a sample of combination techniques for tanto randori which everyone practiced.

Day 3:
06:30 – 07:30
57 participants
Instructed by Nariyama Tetsuro shihan

Nariyama shihan explained that Tomiki Kenji shihan organised the techniques of Ueshiba Morihei sensei into our kihon waza so that they are easier to learn. Tomiki shihan’s original kihon techniques were 15 techniques. These were put together in 1958 and published in Tomiki shihan’s book, “Aikido Nyumon” or, “Introduction to Aikido”. Following this, Tomiki shihan organised the 17 techniques that can be used in randori practice in 1963. Finally, Tomiki shihan organised a set of 19 techniques encompassing all aikido in 1970.
Nariyama shihan explained that despite this progression in Tomiki shihan’s teaching, a set of 8 wrist techniques in Tomiki shihan’s original 15 techniques remained unchanged in the final version of 19 techniques. These 8 wrist techniques can further be divided into 4 techniques of kote hineri and 4 techniques of kote gaeshi. Nariyama shihan first demonstrated the correct way to take grip for each of these techniques, and then how these can be applied.

Techniques practiced were:
Ai gamae katate dori kara Ai gamae Junte dori Kote Hineri
Gyaku gamae katate dori kara Ai gamae Gyakute dori Kote Hineri
Ai gamae katate dori kara Gyaku gamae Junte dori Kote Hineri
Gyaku gamae katate dori kara Gyaku gamae Gyakute dori Kote Hineri
Gyaku gamae katate dori kara Ai gamae Junte dori Kote Gaeshi
Gyaku gamae katate dori kara Ai gamae Gyakute dori Kote Gaeshi
Ai gamae katate dori kara Gyaku gamae Junte dori Kote Gaeshi
Ai gamae katate dori kara Gyaku gamae Gyakute dori Kote Gaeshi
